I’m Now an APNPI Certified Newborn Photographer

Maternity & Newborn, Updates

I have some thrilling news to share with you all – I’ve officially earned my certification as a Newborn Photographer through the prestigious Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International (APNPI).

The world of newborn photography is a beautiful yet delicate one. Our tiny subjects require not just a developed artistic vision but also the utmost care, safety, and expertise. Unfortunately, not all newborn photographers realize how critical these responsibilities are. Newborn safety, posing, and image composition should be the cornerstone of every photographer’s practice.

Enter APNPI – an association that has set out to transform newborn photography for the better. It’s a place where photographers committed to excellence gather to learn, grow, and ensure the highest standards of safety and artistry in newborn photography.

Now, I can’t help but be a bit proud (okay, maybe a lot!) to share that I’ve joined the ranks of just a few hundred certified newborn photographers worldwide. As of September 2023, less than 250 newborn photographers around the world have dedicated the time and effort to earn APNPI certification. Throughout the Greater Portland Metro, there are only 8 APNPI photographers certified for newborn safety and photography expertise (with only two of us being within the actual city of Portland).

Achieving this certification wasn’t a walk in the park. It involved proving my dedication to safety, demonstrating my mastery of lighting, composition, and posing techniques, showcasing my training from seasoned professionals, and most importantly, having happy clients who vouch for my work. The application process was rigorous, but the reward is immeasurable.

While I’m taking a moment to celebrate, the journey doesn’t end here. I’m committed to further honing my skills and earning accreditations in other areas of photography, such as maternity, posed newborn, and families. Challenges demand hard work, patience, and perseverance, and I’m excited to embrace them all.

Froggy Pose is one of the cutest and most popular poses for newborns. It’s also the riskiest for your little one if the photographer has not been trained in safety. I wish every photographer would go through APNPI’s safety certification.

But this journey isn’t just about me; it’s also about you, the parents. You play a crucial role in making the newborn photography industry safer and better. When selecting a newborn photographer, please don’t compromise on safety and quality. Ask the right questions of any prospective photographer, such as:

  • How many years have they been in business?
  • How many babies have they photographed?
  • Where did they receive their training, and who mentored them?
  • Are they certified in newborn safety?
  • What safety practices do they follow during sessions?
  • Are they up to date with vaccinations?
  • Do they carry business insurance?
  • Do they provide hands-on support for your baby during complex baby poses?
    • For example: if you’re dreaming of seeing your little one in “Froggy Pose”, what is the photographer’s plan to achieve that safely?

Invest the time and research to find a newborn photographer who truly understands the delicacy of newborns and treats your precious little one with the care and respect they deserve.
